Pet Sitter Intake Checklist: Information to Collect Before the First Visit

A reliable pet-sitting visit begins before the sitter arrives. A structured intake process helps the owner share essential information and gives the sitter a consistent plan to follow.

Pet profile and routine

Record each pet’s name, species, age, feeding schedule, exercise routine, temperament and normal hiding or sleeping locations. Note what behavior is typical so unusual changes are easier to recognize.

Home access and security

Document the approved entry method, alarm instructions, locked areas and the correct procedure for keys. Avoid putting access codes on forms that will be carried unnecessarily, and store sensitive information securely.

Medication and veterinary details

List medications exactly as supplied by the owner, along with timing, storage and administration instructions. Include the regular veterinarian, emergency clinic and an authorized emergency contact.

Visit checklist

Use a repeatable list covering food, water, litter or cleanup, exercise, medication, home checks and an owner update. A completed visit log creates accountability without exposing unnecessary personal information.

Emergency authorization

Clarify who may approve veterinary care, how the owner can be reached and what spending or transportation instructions apply. The owner should review this information directly with the sitter.

Cancellation and payment expectations

Provide written expectations for scheduling, cancellations, deposits, balances and additional services before work begins.
